Artist's Comments

Here's the cover art I did for Firebase #8. At the time I was doing this, my regular job was really dominating most of my time including weekends. So, unfortunately I couldn't devote as much time to this piece as I would've liked. Excuses .... excuses ....

My goal is to try to grow with each attempt at the cover. What is actually happening is that I'm just trying to get it done and be semi-presentable.

Time was running out so, I just finished up a bit here and a touch up there .... and sent it off to the editor. Although, I got a feeling I could've worked on it a few more days because the issue didn't come out till almost two weeks later. Oh well ... its all good.

This was done with pencils on a 8.5x14 paper. Scanned in and colored in Photoshop. The subject matter (an Adeptus Mechanicus force) is based off pictures of a converted Ad Mech Army. There are a few embelishments here and there on my part when I couldn't quite make out what I was seeing in the reference pics but for the most part ... its drawn from all the miniatures. The player who converted his army did a really nice job. If you're curious, go check it out at:

Personally the cover REALLY caught my eye, and too see the models look exactly like the ones in the book really made me grin.

I really should submit something into the Firebase. You did a great job, regardless. Keep it up!

Awesome Tim. Now you gotta throw up some D&D stuff.
:icondarkzeer:
This is your best work yet Tim!
I got it off Gabe as soon as I could for my desktop.

The detail, the dimension and the sheer sense of atmosphere is exceptional. :joy:

I wasn't a big fan of Adeptus Mechanicus, but this art changed my mind :)
Great composition and colours!
Very great!

That's really great, fantastic detail

couple of minor crits, if you dont mind.

The background walkers are of the same design, right? the rearmost one seems a lot taller, and it's torso is smaller relative to it's limbs. It's a tricky perspective.

The other is admittedly quite subjective, but the foreground tech-priest's weapon is, in game-terms at least, a power axe, shaped like the cog motif. It could use more of a blade edge.

Great stuff tho!

Critiques are welcome!

Yeah, you're spot on. The walkers are off. The proportions are indeed not consistent. This is what happens when you rush and get sloppy. I admit it. :)

As far as the foreground tech-priest's weapon is concerned, it more of a symbol of office with "some" field use. The cog part is most likely the power generator/engine that powers the vice grips on the other side of staff. (outside looks like half a cog, on the inside, the power cells and mechanical parts moving, etc) It wasn't meant to be a bladed power weapon.

Btw, love the Gaunt's Ghost fan art. Keep it up! I love that book series.

Yeah, I'm not normally into the Ad Mech scene either but ... there are times when its cool to explore other parts of the setting other than Marines and Imperial Guard. This was a lot of fun to work on.
